John Pezold's thoughts

I voted NO on HB 258 which amends the code sections regarding aggravated assault of a peace officer. The bill increases the minimum sentence to ten years of imprisonment and if the assault is carried out with the firearm, no part of the mandatory minimum sentence can be probated, stayed or suspended. The bill also increases the punishment for more than one obstruction of a law enforcement charge. The bill increases the sentencing time for each conviction of the obstruction.

I voted NO because I am against mandatory minimum sentencing requirements as it completely removes judicial discretion. I also oppose the more stringent sentences for obstruction, as that charge is widely used for a variety of scenarios and could wind up unnecessarily putting someone behind bars.
